Fiber Expansion
Volcano Communications is steadily expanding fiber infrastructure across the region, working to transition customers to the fastest and most reliable connection technology available.
Volcano Telephone Company was established in 1903 in the historic town of Volcano, California, bringing early telephone service to a small rural community at a time when reliable communication was limited. As demand for connectivity grew, service soon expanded beyond Volcano to communities throughout Amador County.
In its early years, service relied on magneto telephones and switchboards, requiring manual connections between callers.
In 1949, the company was purchased by Jim and Janice Welch, parents of current owner Sharon Lundgren. Their leadership marked the beginning of a family legacy that continues today. By the early 1950s, the system transitioned to dial service, modernizing communication for local residents and eliminating the need for manual switchboard operation.
Over the decades, continued investment and expansion in telephone infrastructure helped connect communities across the region, often in areas where larger providers had little presence.
As communication needs evolved, Volcano expanded beyond telephone service to include cable television. In 1983, Volcano Cable TV was introduced, bringing expanded viewing options to local residents and businesses throughout the region.
This expansion reflected the company’s ongoing commitment to improving access to modern communication services in rural communities. By building and maintaining local infrastructure, Volcano helped ensure customers had access to reliable television service tailored to the unique needs of the area.
As digital communication began transforming how people lived and worked, Volcano expanded once again to meet the needs of the communities it serves. In 1995, Volcano Internet Provider was introduced, bringing early internet access to rural parts of Amador County and surrounding areas, often where options were limited or unavailable.
Providing internet service in rural terrain came with unique challenges, requiring continued investment in infrastructure and technology. Over time, services evolved from early dial-up connections to broadband solutions and more recently, fiber-optic technology. Today, internet service, particularly fiber, represents a primary focus as Volcano continues upgrading infrastructure, converting customers to fiber where possible, and expanding service into areas that previously lacked reliable connectivity.
This ongoing effort reflects a long-standing commitment to improving access while maintaining the local service and community focus that has defined Volcano Communications for generations.
While technology has evolved over the decades, Volcano’s commitment to local customer support has remained constant. From the earliest telephone service to today’s broadband and fiber connectivity, customers have always been able to speak directly with a real person when they call for assistance.
Many of those employees live and work in the same communities they serve, helping provide knowledgeable, responsive support rooted in local understanding, a tradition that continues to set Volcano apart.
